Project

The general objective of the DoCMA project is to improve international research regarding altered states of consciousness (EAC) by strengthening collaboration among the different project participants by sharing scientific knowledge and applied techniques for patients in EAC.

The relationships established between the partners will be fundamental to meet the objectives set out in this project, which are:

  1. Consolidate an international scientific and innovative program that will include research projects on diagnosis, evaluation and treatment in patients on CAD.
  2. Establish a standardized methodology, a common approach and the use of shared resources that foster research collaboration among the different groups with regard to the EAC
  3. Contribute to the transfer of knowledge and increase the quality of life of this type of patients, generating new services, technologies and / or products that respond to the social needs related to patients in EAC.

In summary, this project will increase the scientific competence of the members of the consortium at international level both in research and in the clinical practice of patients in EAC. This will be carried out by improving the transfer of knowledge and skills of different specialists through interventions based on scientific evidence and through the use of clinically validated technologies for a better treatment of this type of patients.

To carry out the different objectives set out in this project, a consortium has been created consisting of a total of ten partners from different European countries (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Greece and Italy) that has hospitals, companies and groups of This is an international research that covers a wide range of knowledge in the treatment of patients in CAD.

Schön Klinik Bad Aibling

Schön Klinik Bad Aibling (founded 1994) is a hospital for neurological rehabilitation with 238 inpatient beds (including intermediate care), 29 intensive care beds, facilities for 10 rehabilitative day care patients, a stroke unit with 5 beds, a sleep laboratory, and a neuropsychiatric treatment centre for patients with dementia disorders.

The hospital covers all aspects of neurological rehabilitation with focus on the treatment of moderate to severe impaired patients, e.g. patients with cerebral ischemia or haemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases, hypoxia, inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, Guillain-Barré-syndrome, critical illness neuropathy, or spinal cord disorders.

Over 800 people are currently employed at the Schön Klinik Bad Aibling. The various and outstanding therapeutic and nursing concepts are known throughout Germany and internationally.

The main objective of our physicians, nursing staff and therapists is to restore the mobility, strength and endurance of our patients and therefore enable them to achieve their individual maximum independence. Our teams work with conventional therapies as well as innovative robot-assisted methods, following evidence-based treatment strategies.

We provide specialists for clinical trials as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. Most of our employees already participated in clinical trials with medical devices and are familiar with the process of treating patients with innovative robotic devices.

Fundación Universidad Loyola Andalucía

Fundación Universidad Loyola Andalucía, is a private University with a strong experience in managing national and international funded projects. Since its beginnings as ETEA Business School, it has worked on projects related with social economy, health and social work, cooperation for development and social innovation. Currently, the university has a Psychology Department dedicated to the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. The department consists of experienced researchers, but also young and promising community of scholars working on the areas of clinical, developmental, cognitive and social psychology as well as on human neuroscience

Universita Degli Studi Della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli

The Department of Psychology offers 3 Psychology Courses (one of which assigns a Double-Degree, conjointly with Université de Lille, France), and several post-lauream Courses among which is the three-year Ph.D. Course in Sciences of the Mind. Each year the Ph.D. Course in Sciences of the Mind assigns at least 1 Ph.D. scholarship to foreign students. Through the Ph.D. Course students have to gradually acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge, aimed at developing innovative research projects, and critic and dialectic skills.

The Department of Psychology hosts several research laboratories equipped with modern technologies. In particular, the Neuropsychology Lababoratory is equipped with dedicated PC and software for experimental studies on healthy individuals, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, Eye-tracking devices, BioPack for evaluation of vegetative responses.

The main research interests of the the Neuropsychology Lababoratory include investigation of cognitive and neural bases of: disorders of consciousness (in cooperation with ICS MAUGERI), executive and behavioural control, emotion, attention and cognition, spatial cognition and drawing, imagery and motor simulation.

Fondazione Santa Lucia

Fondazione Santa Lucia (FSL; www.hsantalucia.it) is a nationally renowned hospital for neuromotor rehabilitation and research center. Since 1992, the Italian Ministry of Health has awarded FSL the status of “Scientific Institute for Hospitalization and Treatment of National Importance” (IRCCS) and “High-level Specialization in Neuromotor Rehabilitation”. The hospital hosts more than 2000 in and out patients per year (suffering from cerebrovascular disorders, brain and spinal cord injury-related disorders). As a Scientific Institute, the Fondazione Santa Lucia carries out intensive research work covering virtually all aspects in the fields of neuromotor and cognitive rehabilitation. Under an agreement with the “Sapienza” and “Tor Vergata” Universities of Rome, the internal Teaching Pole hosts first-level degree courses for health professions, attended by about 400 students a year, as well as the School of Specialization in Neuropsychology.

GIGA Consciousness

Our unit aims to understand the neural correlates of human conscious awareness. Understanding consciousness remains one of the greatest mysteries for science to solve. How do our minds work? Will we ever be able to read thoughts? How can we know if persons who are anesthetized or in coma might feel pain or have any perceptions and how could we have access to these? What is brain death? What are near-death experiences? What happens in our brains during daydreaming, hypnosis or meditation? At present, nobody understands how matter (our trillions of neural connections) becomes perception and thought.

The GIGA-Consciousness encompasses 3 laboratories that study human consciousness and it’s physiological (Sensation and Perception Research Group – PIs: Audrey Vanhaudenhuyse and Audrey Maudoux), pharmacological (Anesthesia & Intensive Care – Pis: Vincent Bonhomme and Didier Ledoux) and pathological (Coma science group – PI: Steven Laureys) modifications. While philosophers have pondered upon the mind-brain conundrum for millennia, scientists have only recently been able to explore the connection analytically through measurements and perturbations of the brain’s activity. This ability stems from recent advances in technology and especially from emerging functional neuroimaging and electrophysiology studies.

The mapping of conscious perception and cognition in health (e.g., mind-wandering, hypnosis, hallucinatory drugs and anesthesia) and in disease (e.g., coma, “vegetative” unresponsive wakefulness, minimally conscious states, locked-in syndrome) is providing exiting new insights into the functional neuroanatomy of human consciousness.

Our unit aims to better understand consciousness and cognition and its pathological (coma and related states), pharmacological (anesthesia) and physiological (hypnosis) modifications as is reflected in our papers.  Our research uses state-of-the-art multimodal imaging combining the information from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), structural MRI, positron emission tomography (PET), electroencephalography (EEG), event related potential (ERP), non-invasive brain stimulation techniques (NIBS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with EEG data.

ICS Maugeri

The Maugeri Clinical and Scientific Institutes (ICS Maugeri) encompasses 19 clinical research institutes focused on:

  • Intensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation targeted to neurological, orthopedic, cardiological and pneumologic patients
  • Occupational medicine: work-related diseases and risk factor assessment

The Principal research lines and projects of the Maugeri Research laboratory for patients with DoC located in Telese Terme are focused on:

  • clinical and neurophysiological long–term evolution of patients with DoC
  • clinical, structural and functional neuroimaging markers for recovery of consciousness
  • quantitative assessment of clinical sign of consciousness (e.g. visual behavior)
  • neuromodulation (pharmacological and tDCS)
  • evaluation and treatment of psychological distress and cognitive deficits in caregiver/family

The multimodal assessment and treatment methods are currently applied to brain-injured inpatients, admitted to Intensive Neurorehabilitation Unit of Maugeri Institute of Telese Terme.

The ICS MAUGERI – DOC research laboratory is the leader of the diagnosis/prognosis subgroup of the International Brain Injury Association DoC- Special Interest and currently coordinates the Multi-centric longitudinal study on behavioral and electrophysiological diagnostic and prognostic markers in prolonged disorder of consciousness.

g.tec Guger Technologies (AT)

g.tec medical engineering was founded in 1999 as a spin-off from the Technical University in Graz, Austria. Christoph Guger and Günter Edlinger developed the first commercial Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system at this time. As a producer of state-of-the-art invasive and non-invasive BCI systems, g.tec plays a leading role in international markets of BCI, medical devices, neurotechnology, neurorehabilitation and biosignal processing with branches in Schiedlberg and Graz (Austria), Barcelona (Spain), and New York (USA).

g.tec’s BCI systems are realized by four major principles: slow waves, steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP), motor imagery (MI) and evoked potentials (EP). The hardware and software of g.tec’s BCI technology can be used in clinical environments or for research purposes such as the analysis of the brain, heart or muscle activity, brain assessments of severe brain injuries and disorders of consciousness, motor rehabilitation after stroke, neuromarketing, deep brain stimulation, brain mapping, neuro prosthesis, communication, painting and closed-loop invasive and non-invasive BCI experiments.

g.tec’s products and research activities have been widely described in peer-reviewed research publications, demonstrating the quality of tools and methods and the unlimited possibilities and the impact of brain-computer interface technology.
